Track Club coming to Beckwith and area!!!
The Township of Beckwith is supporting the establishment of a Track and Field Club for the township itself and the surrounding areas of Carleton Place and Mississippi Mills. The club will be known as the Beckwith Athletics Club (BAC), an acronym with a double meaning of Beckwith-Almonte-Carleton Place. The club is offering programs in most of the present-day disciplines of track and field (now commonly called Athletics) to youth ages 12 and older.
Programs will be offered in various formats on a year-round basis with some parts of the year obviously be more involved than others. Generally, programs with be based on both school and club-oriented clientele. (Most youth will be involved with one or the other or in many cases both).
Coaching will be available based on the traditional areas of sprinting, hurdling, middle- and long-distance running, throwing (shot put, discus, javelin), and both horizontal (long and triple) and vertical jumps (high and pole vault). In some cases, coaching availability will be seasonal). Approximately 12 coaches with a vast array of experience have committed to the program. Some coaches are available on a part-time basis while several are committed towards a full-time basis.
In the near future programs are going to be developed for 5 to 11-year old age group under a nationally structured program known as Run-Jump-Throw. Details will be made available through local schools.
The season will begin this November 15, 2019 indoors at the Beckwith Indoor Turf at Beckwith Park. This indoor season will consist of two 2hr. sessions / week on Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings where both event instruction and preparation will take place. There are some Friday and Sunday dates which will be excluded for holidays and previously scheduled events. There are approximately 32 two-hour sessions available over this time frame.
For those athletes who want to compete at the club level in addition to the school programs, membership in Athletics Ontario is a necessity. This will include an additional fee payable to Athletics Ontario and a fee for a BAC uniform (approx. $50). This enables athletes to compete against other track clubs outside of school both in the winter and in June/July when the school season is finished. Athletes will be able to compete locally and provincially and nationally.
A complete program outline and fee schedule is available at the Beckwith Township Office and the BAC Facebook page.
For those athletes who want to compete only at the school level those programs will be continuing as per the status quo including fees charged by the schools.
The club also intends to offer coaching courses and opportunities for those wishing to get involved as well as opportunities for adults (road races, how-to-run programs, etc.) More information will be published soon. In addition, several individuals with a wide range of experience are currently being recruited in order to expand the coaching ranks.
The current line-up of coaches includes the following:
Sprints and Hurdles: Anna Barr, Brian Dickie, Chris Montgomery, and Rick Lotan
Endurance and Distance: Jeff Seaby
Jumps: Dan Hickey, Steve King, Craig Gerig, Rick Lotan
